I am a historian, educator, researcher, and consultant. I am passionate about helping people understand reconciliation and decolonization. I believe the past matters just as much as our present actions and future goals: understanding the history of colonialism in Canada is a key starting point I have learned about from many colleagues, students, and Indigenous Elders and Teachers over the decades that I have studied and worked in this area.
Before becoming an academic, I had many jobs, including working as a land claims historian for several First Nations. That work was about trying to right past wrongs, and it eventually propelled me into academia. I continue researching and consulting alongside teaching and writing, as that work remains important.
Originally from Saskatchewan (Territories of Treaty 4 Nations and part of the Metis Homeland), I now live and work on Vancouver Island, a grateful guest on Snuneymuxw Territory.
